The Native American way of life is exciting for kids to learn about; it seems so exotic as it is so different to our British way of life.

While we live in houses made from bricks, glass and concrete, Native Americans often lived in ‘tipis’ made from wooden frames and buffalo hide.
Native American Colour in Tipi Kits
– made from strong card rather than buffalo hide! – are great fun for kids to make while learning about Tipis. Plains Indians favoured this type of house as they could be put up or dismantled in under an hour; perfect for tribes who moved around to follow the movements of the buffalo herds.
Did your children know that many tipis were 12 feet tall (twice as tall as a large grown-up) – tall enough to allow headroom for the horses that travelled with some tribes!
As buffalos and horses were such a big part of Native American life; perhaps kids could draw pictures of these glorious animals on their tipis with fibre pens!
Depictions of animals were also used to adorn the totem poles that Native Americans used to make. Few Native American totem poles survive today as they were made from cedar; a type of wood which tends to decay.
However, you can still make arts and crafts totem poles; an activity which children will love to do.
Native American Foam Totem Pole Kits

Native Americans loved to hold ceremonies around the totem poles; occasions when dancing was popular. Once the totem poles have been built you could have a class Sun dance; can the kids’ moves affect the weather outside the classroom window?
