Biometric Gun

Biometric Gun
how safe are biometric gun safes against kids?

will it protect my fire arm against my kids when i am not around?

I am always wary about biometric gun safes, for 2 reasons, either it doesn’t work worth a hoot and doesn’t keep anyone out, or it works so well that YOU yourself can’t get in…

About 2yrs ago (summer 2009), my company rolled out a harware upgrade, and replaced all of the laptops in the company. These laptops were SUPPOSED to be biometrically protected, so instead of entering 2 log-in passwords (our old system), you would only enter 1 password (measured for key-stroke rhythms), then the computers would prompt you to speak your name (voice recognition and vocal rhythm), then slide 3 of your fingers across the scan point (reading your timing as well as your fingerprints). The vendors promised that it was the latest and greatest technology, and would totally revolutionize how our company protected it’s IP (intellectual property).

About half of the company could no longer access their own computer at all, because the biometric scanner wouldn’t recognize their own hands. Some of the people got rejected at the key-stroke part, some got rejected at the vocal pattern part, some got rejected at the fingerprinting… It was a total crap shoot whether they could ever access their computers. The OTHER half of the computers could be opened by a barking dog and a few hotdogs slid over the scanner, so their computers weren’t protected at all.

So personally, no, I haven’t seen the technology work very well.

I’m not necessarily worried about kids getting into my guns, but I AM worried about theft (and fire). On my safes, I prefer old fashioned mechanical combination locks. I also install my gun-locks on my weapons every time they’re put away (require a key to unlock), and I use a cable type bike lock to restrain my weapons in the safe (combination). When I leave the house for long periods, I also lock the doors to my “hobby room” (definitely not kid friendly), so if someone wanted to access one of my guns, they’d have to have 2 different keys and 2 different combinations. If they want to go through THAT much trouble, then I suppose they earned the right.

If you didn’t want to go through that much trouble, I suppose a reprogrammable electronic combination lock would work well, so you could change the combination at set intervals to keep the kids guessing.

All that said, growing up, my dad kept his .22lr loaded behind the seat of his truck, and his .44mag rifle leaning in the corner of his closet. My sis and I knew better than to fool with guns, so we didn’t. The first time I saw my dad’s .44mag was when we had to put down a sick cow, I was probably 4-5yrs old. The big slug tore a fist sized hole straight through her head. My dad pointed it out and said, “that’s why you don’t ever want to play with guns, they’re NOT toys”. When I turned 5, I got my own BB gun that I kept in my own closet, and when I turned 8 or 9, I got my own .22lr and a .410 single shot, which I also kept in my closet.

Open and honest education is the most important part of having firearms around kids, not your security system. Safety first, security second…
