Would you consider this to be a good HD shotgun?

NO……. Yes the Mossberg 500 is an excellent choice…. But NOT with a pistol grip stock……. Take a little time and head on down to the gun dealer and look over any Mossberg 500 with a regular stock….. Look closely at the slide actuator switch… Shoulder the shotgun and pay close attention to how your middle finger can hit the slide actuator switch with ease….. With a pistol grip or a pistol grip stock you can NOT actuate this switch….. In the 1 in a million chance your in a serious gunfight this could cost you your life!….. Lets say you had a cartridge that was a dud and it failed to fire…. With a pistol grip stock it would take you an extra 2, 3, maybe 6 seconds to fumble around with getting your finger on this button to rack a fresh cartridge in the chamber…. That’s all it could take for you to get dead….. With a regular stock model you don’t even have to take your eye of the target to re-chamber a fresh cartridge…..

I only recommend a pistol grip model if you are in a real confined space like a small house, trailer, boat or tiny apartment…..

If you feel you need a full stock then get a plain boring looking stock…. That tactical nonsense will only get in the way…..
