Blackhawk Specops

Blackhawk Specops
Best stock for a Remington 870 tactical?

I have heard good things about the BLACKHAWK® SpecOps stock. I was also looking at some top and side folding stocks. Or the factory stock with a pistol grip.

Personally, I think that it depends on what you plan to do with the shotgun. Home defense? Camp gun? On your boat? Is it something that absolutely requires a pistol grip or a folding stock? I ask this because a folding pistol-grip stock is not exactly the logical choice for extreme accuracy.

Don’t get me wrong, though. A folding stock can be useful. For example, I grew up in a little hick town and handled firearms from an early age. So, my first real job was surveying remote areas only reachable by helicopter. It was recommended that we each have a long gun for bear defense. After some thought, I chose a Remington 870 Marine Magnum (3″ receiver, nickel-plate, 18″ barrel, extended mag tube) and put a Choate pistol-grip side-folder on it. It fit all of my criteria: extremely compact to fit in a helicopter’s cargo bay; weather-resistant nickel-plate; handles 3″ magnum slugs; minimum of 5 magnum shells in the mag tube, plus one up the pipe; and could be shot comfortably from the hip even when the stock was folded.

It fit my needs very well and worked great in the bush. I only needed it twice, but it saved my life both times (…killed a predatory yearling grizzly and scared off a prowling cougar).

However, it wasn’t good for very much else, other than home defense (which is what I’m now using it for). Long range accuracy is an issue because of the pistol grip and rudimentary stock (see the link below to see what I mean). The balance is also off. These aren’t big concerns for home defense where I might only need to put a load of shot on an intruder down a hallway. But, I’m certainly not going to be hunting or shooting skeet or clays with it.

Anyway, I could ramble on for hours about this thing. :-) Back to your question…

I’ve only fired a Remington 870 with a SpecOps stock once. I didn’t like it because it felt like the stock was too thick and tall. I tried to adjust it, but never felt like I was sighting on the target properly. Obviously, this is subjective, so I’d suggest trying one in person before you buy it. Who knows? Maybe you’ll prefer it over the factory stock (which is actually a pretty good stock, in my opinion – the comb height is right, although the length of pull is a bit long for me).

I’ve also used both Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s with top-folding stocks (mostly ATI and Choate) because they were popular with other people at my job. I didn’t like those, either, especially because of the cheapness of build quality and lack of anywhere to rest your cheek while aiming. Again, your mileage will vary. Try it before buying it.

p.s. Sorry about the long answer. My husband says I talk too much, too. :-P
