Am I eligible to own a private gun is USA?

I am an international student that live in buffalo city new york. may I ask that am i eligible to have a private gun ( handguns or rifle) or i have to be a resident of the US.
It is because my protection, because i have to work very late and feel unsafe

In New York you need to register your weapon and apply for a conceal weapons permit (if you’re going carry firearms in public hoisted or concealed.) Permits aren’t easy to get because in New York and in California, the local Sheriffs Dept has the most power to approve/disapprove permits. Even if you’re qualified and legally able to carry firearms, they don’t have to give you the permit if they don’t want. It kind of sucks. Residents in most states are allowed to purchase firearms. Also, make sure once you get your firearm to practice shooting it at the range and be proficient in it.
