Buttplate Screw

Is my Mauser K98 a Russian Capture?

My K98 has a matching action and barrel. Bolt has matching numbers as a unit but does not match the rifle. Front barrel band does not match. It has a cleaning rod but is missing set screws. There is no “X” stamp nor any electro-penciling. It has a correct buttplate for its year of manufacture. No shellac is present on the stock but there is a faint outline of an eagle stamp on the buttstock. Bluing shows wear and is not thick. Thanks for any and all help.

The swastika is normally pinged out. But, I’ve seen it ground away. If, the rifle bears no swastika stamps upon the receiver? It is made during the 3rd Reich period? Then it is probably a captured rifle. Having a mismatched bolt and other parts is not uncommon. The surrendering (en mass) German soldiers were normally required to toss the bolt in one pile and the rifle in another. Look for the importers marks upon the muzzle area of the barrel.Or, on the right side of receiver.

Think of it another way? Lucky you have an unaltered captured rifle. There is a trend towards restamping the eagle and swastika back on. Not always easy to spot that.
