is the thomson center encore pro hunter a good long range rifle?

what caliber is best? 800+ meters. deer and elk, is that rifle any good for long shots?

Well its not going to get you out there more than any other brand really. It depends on the load and the caliber for the most part. Myself I really like the Thompson Center Encore. Very versatile and it is accurate. It will shoot far with the right load, but 800+ meters? The right gun and the gear will get you out there 350 meters just fine. After that you are talking about skill of the person who is handling the gun. How much experience he has shooting. Self reloading consistency. And obviously a range finder is required. Even then I would recommend targeting a piece of paper than a wild animal. Most loads that have enough punch to down an elk are not going to get out there 800 meters with any kind of velocity. You may get lucky and get out there with a 5.56 round or something but you are not going to kill whatever it is you are shooting.

I guess the world record confirmed kill distance was set in 2002 by some guy in the Canadian Military. He shot a man in the torso on the 3rd shot at 1.5 miles with a 50 caliber sniper rifle. The first shot landed on the ground. The second hit the mans backpack. The third put a small wound the size of a head of lettuce in his torso. Well I guess you wouldn’t call it small…lol. His gun was a TEC-50 or TAC-50 I forget which was the name because I read this a while back.

All I’m saying is at 800+ meters with just about any gun out there you’d be better off calling in a mortar strike on the elk.
