Linux/Ubuntu Bare Metal Recovery (live) question?
I have 3 Linux/Ubuntu servers. I need a way to do snapshots of them over time (kind of like Norton Ghost does on Windows) and to be able to easily recover them if there’s a hard drive failure using a Bare Metal Restore. I have a Buffalo NAS array that is local that I can copy the data to.
I posted this before and people recommended Remastersys or Clonezilla. This will not work because I need a way to backup the servers when they are active. I also would like to automate a daily/weekly backup schedule. I do not want to shut down the servers to do the cloning.
The problem with doing “snapshots” while the server is running is that files will usually be constantly created and modified. This is why most servers use either a striped RAID or at least mirrored master and slave disks, so you can copy / restore from one if the other goes down.
If you can lock disk activity during low usage hours, you can do a very simple backup using dd. dd can do an exact bit-by-bit copy of a disk into an image file, and write it back later. This can take a long time, though, which is why I would recommend having redundant disks and only locking one at a time.

dd is about as “bare metal” as you can get. It is a simple yet powerful tool. Be very careful with your input and output files, or you’ll see why some say dd stands for “destroy data.”
