Colt Detective

Colt Detective
Should I be careful about the ammunition I put in any of these old guns?

I really like older guns, and I want to know if I pick up some of these classics, will I be getting myself into a trap with what I can safely shoot out of the gun. If you know modern ammo would be too powerful (or just incorrect) please try to give me a good substitute for the original style ammo.

Here’s the list of suspects:
S&W K-38 Masterpiece
S&W K-22 Masterpiece
S&W Model 29 (30-60 years old)
S&W Model 27 (same era as above)
Colt Bankers Special
Colt Detective Special
Colt .38 Police Positive
Remington 870 (from the 60s or 70s)
And a 50-100 year old Marlin lever action rifle

Thanks!

All of the models you list are modern enough to handle all modern ammo of the proper caliber except perhaps a 100-year-old Marlin lever gun. You would have to more specific about age, model and caliber. If it’s only 50 years old it should be fine.

I would not make a habit of shooting +P ammo in the medium-frame revolvers such as the K-38, but a few rounds should not do any harm if you feel you have to try it. K frame S&Ws were never meant for steady use of maximum loads. If they are subjected to a lot of hot loads they will begin to have problems with cylinder timing and alignment. The same applies to the Colts you list. The Model 29, Model 27 and the K-22 should be safe with all modern ammo, as is the 870.

You will pay quite a bit for some of these guns, notably the Colt Banker’s Special, especially if they are in nice condition. Old Colts in general tend to be fairly expensive.

I share your liking for these models. My dad shot an Model 14 S&W K-38 Masterpiece for many years in police competition. His duty sidearm was the very similar Model 10. I have a Model 14 made in the late 1950s or early 1960s. It shoots very well, although the iron sights have become tougher for me to manage since I passed 50! My 19-year-old daughter, who has excellent vision, can use my Model 14 to shoot the 10 ring out of a 25-yard Standard American slow fire target with a score in the mid-90s.Youth will be served, especially with iron sights.

I’m assuming that the guns in question are in good condition, not abused, modified in unsafe ways or badly worn. If there is any doubt, consult a qualified gunsmith.
