Magpul AR15 Stocks
Magpul have a rock-solid reputation in competitive shooting, law enforcement and military circles. Their range of M16 series aftermarket parts has won many accolades and their magazines have just been made general issue in the UK Armed Forces. Magpul stocks have become popular with military personnel for their own purchases and with those buying or building their own AR15s.
The lowest cost stock in their range is the Magpul MOE stock or ‘Magpul Original Equipment’. This robust, entry level stock enables the user to achieve a better cheek weld than the military issue unit. You can mount a sling through any of the four slits provided or tie a paracord sling around the eye provied. This unit is made of tough durable polycarbonate over machined aluminium and has an ultra tough A-frame construction. This stock will not auto-collapse as it has a well designed release and locking mechanism which uses a high quality stainless steel spring. The lever is in a protected position beneath the comb of the stock where it is protected from accidental operation.
The whole unit has smooth contours to avoid snagging on foliage etc. Three different lengths of rubber butt pad are are available, the milspec units coming with 30mm pads and the commercial spec. with 55mm – a 70mm is an option. There are also three heights of comb risers available, but these can only be used on the AR15 with the stock fully extended – please check that they will work with whatever weapon you intend to purchase them for before ordering.
The next model in the lineup is the CTR stock or ‘Compact/Restricted Tactical’. This is essentially the MOE with an additional, self tightening friction locking mechanism that makes the stock completely rigid when locked. It also has the addition of a push fit QD sling swivel mount. Both the MOE and CTR are available in milspec or commercial versions – the milspec suitable for Colt and other manufacturer milspec buffer housings of 1.14″ outside diameter intended for four or six position adjustable stocks and the commercial for commercial AR15s with 1.17″ diameter buffer housings. Both are available in Black, Dark Earth, Foliage Green and OD Green to blend in to different terrain and vegetation types. Both are also essentially ‘drop-in’ units that can be added to military weapons without breaking regulations, something that can’t be done with the next model, the UBR or ‘Utility Battle Rifle’.
The Magpul UBR stock is a big jump up in capability offering a operator defined pull out position implemented from seven by placing a set screw. You can go with the standard two QD swivel push button mounts which can be swapped from side to side or pay a little extra for fully ambidextrous mounts. This unit provides totally consistent cheek weld as the cheek piece does not telescope with the butt. The 1.63lb weight of the unit with its entry length receiver extension helps balance accessories mounted at the front of the weapon.
A locking box is included that fits into the triangle in the middle of the stock. This can contain many useful itesm If you prefer the skeletonized look, you can simply leave it off the rifle. Once again, smooth lines prevent fouling and the lever is protected from accidental actuation. The multi layer construction protects internal components from dirt and sand ingress. This stock uses an entry length receiver extension which you are unlikely to be allowed to fit to a service weapon. It also requires an M4 buffer and spring to fit (not included) in an AR platform and some .308 ARs may require a shorter custom buffer and buffer spring.
These stocks are intended for service weapons but can fit on a plethora of other systems including bolt action rifles, shotguns and even some machineguns. Magpul also cater to snipers and designated marksmen with other stocks which I hope to describe in future articles.
