Troy Upgrades For The AR15

No other rifle has lent itself to customization like the AR15. A whole industry has grown up around replacing literally every component of this five decade old rifle. Troy Industries are dominant in this industry. Troy has won a large slice of the AR15 OEM part and accessory market too as well as delivering to manufacturers of other weapon systems.

One of the things Troy are best known for is their range of back up iron sights, primarily for the AR, but commonly used on other rifles – especially those with full length Picatinny Rails. Machined from aluminium and secured with stainless steel fixings, Troy sights are designed to withstand use in harsh environments. The whole range of Troy Battle Sights is available in a Type III black or matte earth anodized finish. They follow the A1 pattern in having an L-shaped flip-up aperture assembly with large and small apertures. The large aperture is a battle sight set to 300 meters and the small aperture caters for longer engagements at 500 meters. The sights adjust exactly as A1 sights – the rear with a coin or the tip of a bullet and the front with the standard adjuster tool of which Troy also sell their own variant. The clicks use the familiar 0.5 MoA value.

The range starts out with a fixed range for those who want to be able to transition to fixed sights instantly without flipping a front and backsight up. Like the rest of the range the front sight is available with either M16 style wings or an HK/AK style open topped ring that is itself very easy to center on a target for rapid engagement. Standard and reduced height versions are made to allow for direct gas or gas piston rifle usage – they both fold down to only 0.460″ high. Gas block versions of the front sights are also available. Twin spring detent balls secure the sights in either up or down position – when folded there are no protruding levers or other projections to catch on equipment. The rearsights come with either a conventional round aperture or ‘Di-optic’ Aperture (DOA) which has a diamond shaped aperture with a white line running from each point for extended range shooting and a broken topped aperture with a single white crossbar for close range. This enables easier and more precise centering of the foresight for faster more accurate shooting. Both standard and DOA rearsights and all the folding foresights can be supplied with tritium dots to provide a night shooting solution independent of batteries or electronics.

Troy set out to make a quad rail system that would be free-floating, easy to mount and would provide an unbroken length of MIL STD 1913 Picatinny rail incorporating the rifles existing receiver rail and avoiding the use of a heavy cantilever set-up. The Troy quad rail is available in non free floating versions that simply replace the handguard in seconds and free floating units that bolt around the barrel nut of the AR series rifle, actually reinforcing the barrel-receiver joint. The Troy AR quad rail is produced in different lengths for different length gas systems. Some of these quad rails need a low profile gas block whilst others have an opening to take the factory front sight. The fitting process is simplified by two part construction and a four bolt clamping system. Both the units themselves and lenghts of cover are available in the usual black and earth colors. Replacement of accessories is facilitatied by alphanumerically coded slots and large holes facilitate the dispersion of heat and reduce the weight of the units.

Vertical foregrips have had a recent resurgence of popularity with the world’s militaries. Fore-grips allow far better control than horizontal fore-ends, especially in fast moving action. The Troy Combat Grip is a very rugged and adaptable unit. A full length stainless steel locking bar and front and rear cross-slot bars secure and prevent the grip from moving. It can be configured in full length and ‘stubby’ configurations and provides an o-ring slealed storage compartment for batteries etc. It is also offered in black or earth finish. In slippery conditions, grip is assisted by a knurled surface.
