Radiant Heating in Home, how to control temperature?
We got radiant heating in our home (hot water pass throught pipes), one bedroom get too hot while the one at the end gets not enough heat. Thermostate is set at 70 deg. How to lower the heat in the hotter room? Can I cover pipes with something to make it less hot?
If the in-floor radiant heating was set up with separate loops for each room then you can “zone” them by providing separate valves and thermostats. If they were looped together then you have a design problem. If the pipes are in concrete it is a great deal of work and impractical to change them. If it is below a wood floor you might be able to reach the pipes.
Although radiant heating will travel through carpeting you might slow it up a bit. You could install thick carpet padding in the hot room with an equally thick carpet. In the cool room you would ideally have a ceramic floor but in any event no carpets. In the hot room furniture should come right down to the floor like a captain’s bed (covering the floor) while in the cool room the entire floor should be exposed with beds and furniture on legs.
Pay special attention to air leaks and insulation around the cool room. If it is on the corner of a house (more exposed outer walls) or on the North side you may have to provide some additional insulation or window treatments (like movable insulation shutters)
