38 Special Detective Spec. Trigger jammed?
I have a 38 special Detective Spec and every time I pull the trigger it gets jammed and the cylinder doesn’t even budge. What’s wrong?
No I haven’t taken it apart recently, and the strange thing is it worked fine a couple days ago and it’s been locked up since then.
Please don’t try to force it. First check to make sure your ejection rod hasn’t come loose.
If not this check the face of the frame behind the cylinder to see if a piece of metal, or grime has caused the arm that advances the cylinder to stick.
If this isn’t the case, see if the front of the cylinder is stuck against the forcing cone. There should be a very small gap that sometimes gets blocked by residue buildup on the front of the cylinder and edge of the forcing cone. Clean and scrub with a brass brush (not steel). An old trick I use is to flatten a brass shell and use it to scrape harder residue off the front of the cylinder. However, with newer chemicals now available this becoming an extinct method.
You may also look at rough usage causing the crane to warp. The crane is the piece of metal that the cylinder mounts on, and opens the swing out revolver. This doesn’t apply to a single action where the cylinder comes out in one piece. The crane can get warped causing part of the front of the cylinder to stick against forcing cone. Always hold your revolver with one hand, while holding the cylinder with the other hand during opening and closing, especially when loaded as the added weight makes it more likely to get warped (bent). Never do like on TV where the snap the cylinder open and shut with one hand. You will definitely damage your weapon.
If the crane is warped you need it replaced by a gunsmith. If the other issues check clear then you need a gunsmith. This is very rare in a quality revolver, but your weapon may have a lot of years and rounds through it. Good luck.
