whats the difference between a single action and a double action pistol?
There are actually a couple of varieties. Typically a single action trigger only releases a pre-c0cked hammer onto the round, while a double action trigger has the capacity to both c0ck and release the hammer.
In practical terms (and really only talking about semi-automatics, as revolvers are a slightly different deal) the action of the slide with c0ck the hammer as it cycles on most pistols. This means that for the most part even when using guns with double action triggers most shooters do most of their shooting in single action mode. There are some semi-autos that are specifically designed as double action only where the action of a slide does not leave the hammer in a c0cked position.
The real difference is in how you can carry the gun. A single action trigger pull is often far lighter than a double action one as it is does not have to compress the mainspring of the gun. For this reason a single action gun will usually be carried with a manual safety on if there is a round in the chamber (as a live round in the chamber on a single action gun almost always indicates that the hammer is still c0cked). The other option would be to carry the gun with nothing in the chamber and then cycle the slide when it is needed.
A double action gun can usually be carried with a round in the chamber and the hammer down. These guns frequently use a de-c0cker either in place or or in conjunction with a safety. In the hammer down safety off position most double action guns are still safe to carry (as you cannot simple jostle the trigger and have it go off). In this condition all one has to do is draw and pull the trigger. This means for carry has become more popular with military and police departments as there are fewer things to distract a shooter in that moment of crisis when it is important to be able to get a shot off. The primary downsides to this mode of carry are the fact that the initial trigger pull is usually quite different from subsequent pulls (remedied with double action only guns where the pull is always consistently long) and the fact that a potential bad guy stealing the gun must only pull the trigger for it to shoot.
