Do I need to wear ear protection when shooting a high powered .177 caliber air rifle?

Yes you should wear hearing protection. The Beeman R9 puts out 112 decibels as measured by a decibel meter specifically designed for impulse sounds(1) and Pyramid Air rates it a 3/5 on their loudness scale for airguns. The Gamo Big Cat is rated as a 4/5 on the same scale which means its louder than the Beeman R9. Its rated less than the Career 707 (a 5/5 on Pyramid Air’s scale) which gives 126.23 decibels(1). So that means the Big Cat puts out somewhere between 112 and 126 decibels. That’s not that loud compared to a .22 LR’s 140 decibels, but its still well over the 85 decibels which can cause hearing damage with protracted/repeated exposure.(2)
