What’s the best age to get my daughter’s ears pierced?
She is eight months old. What are the pros and cons of getting her ears pierced now?
She might pull at them a lot if she’s too young. My boyfriend’s baby cousin had her ears pierced when she was just a couple months old, and by the time she was 1, she had pulled on them so much that they had to take them out and let her ears heal. Wait until she’s at least a couple years old and will understand when you say “don’t pull”. Or you could wait until she’s old enough to decide for herself. I didn’t get mine pierced until I was 10.
If you get them pierced now, it might hurt less and she’d forget the pain (most kids don’t remember a whole lot before they’re at least 3 or 4 because their brains aren’t developed enough to form memories -learned that in Psych class). However, I think she’d probably end up pulling at them a lot and it could hurt her or damage her earlobes (my bf’s cousin had little scar-marks from where she pulled at them). She might also try to swallow the earring or the back if she does get it out of her ear and that wouldn’t be good.
It’s up to you though. If you don’t think she’ll play with them, you can do it now, all kids are different. Although if she does, you can always take them back out and just get them re-done later.
