Five fun kids’ games which involve risk and challenge
Is your children’s playground a joyless no-fun zone devoid of games, challenges and laughter?
Well, if it is then it could be the fault of school and council bureaucrats who are overly-worried about being sued should a child become injured during a game.
That is the view of Judith Hackitt, head of the Health and Safety Executive, who also thinks that some local authorities are using health and safety rules to avoid spending money on games and activities.
Arts and Crafts companies like Yellow Moon supply many fun games and activities which are physically challenging for youngsters – games which involve taking fun calculated risks; a great skill to take into adult life.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Ms Hackitt pointed out cases of children being forced to wear goggles while playing conkers and a pancake race where running was forbidden as extreme examples of health and safety gone wrong.
Ms Hackitt told the newspaper: “Playgrounds have become joyless, for fear of a few cuts and bruises. This creeping culture of risk aversion and fear of litigation puts at risk our children’s education and preparation for adult life.”
The HSE supremo has a word to describe these bureaucrats. “They are well-meaning but misguided jobsworths,” she said.
Perhaps some of these ‘jobsworths’ might not approve of our list of five fun games (below) but kids love them!
- Water Bomb Factory – this ingenious device can be clamped on to a table and attached to a water hose to give children a head-start when it’s water-fight time. It’s capable of filling 100 water bombs in just ten minutes. A Water Bomb Catapult Set is another useful weapon for kids to have up their sleeves.
- Water Pistols – for close-combat water-fight skirmishes, the heavy artillery of water bombs is little use. This is where Water Pistols really come into their own. The extra reserve tank on top of the pistols can provide trigger-happy kids with that vital bit of ammunition during boisterous battles.
- Keep Kids Cooking Apron and Hat Sets – those Health and Safety ‘jobsworths’ might be reluctant to let kids cook for fear they might have an accident. But well-supervised cookery sessions can teach kids how enjoyable it is to get creative with messy ingredients. Yellow Moon have lots of other fantastic cooking essentials such as Sandwich Cutters, Baking Sets and Cupcake Makers.
- A Slip ‘n’ Slide Wave Rider can take a bit of bravery to have a go on for the first time. But once that first hurdle is out of the way it provides kids with hours of fun. Just attach the wave rider’s inflatable boogie board to a garden hose and let the slipping and sliding commence.
- The Silly Outdoor Game – this fun game involves rolling a large inflatable dice which decides whether you must bunny hop, leapfrog or cartwheel your way past cones to the course’s finish line. It’s very silly – a bit like the jobsworths we mentioned earlier.
