Ferro Wood

I’m buying a boat, whats the best material for it to be made of?
Fiberglass, wood, steel or Ferro-Cement?
I’m looking to buy a second hand Yacht for around $35,000 to sail around the world in, but I don’t have much experience in sailing, so would appreciate any and all help. Thanks
I encourage the dream and the voyage. While I agree it takes a good deal of knowledge & know how… The fact is… It requires much more faith then finance, and a great deal more fortitude then vessel or experience.
Sadly, I know too many sailors that have both the vessel and the finances, but simply don’t have enough faith in themselves or their vessel to toss those lines that bind them from the ultimate experience of absolute freedom.
The best, smooth riding, quiet hull, minimum moisture & mildew will be a well built (top quality) fiberglass or fiberglass over wood hull and deck.
Unless it is very well insulated & sealed, a steel hull produces echos and sweats a lot. This means moisture almost always in the hull which permeates the air, and finds its way into every corner, cabinet, closet, and crevice of your cabin… which results in mildew.
Ferro-Cement really never has been a very well accepted boat building material. I personally have never spent any time on one, except for a brief tour. However, I do know that some Marinas will not accept these vessels into their flock. My Marina in Galveston for one, and my Marina in NY before that, would not rent slips for Ferro-Cement boats. The Ferro-cement boats simply got off to a bad start, quickly earned really bad reputations, and (like Bayliner) have never been able to rid themselves of that reputation. I know they have some fans, but I could never even consider owning one simply for the fact I can’t afford to get stuck somewhere – where the Marina won’t accept my boat.
If you’re new to sailing & boat buying – and you really want to sail off to Paradise and/or on around the world… you will enjoy and learn a lot from the link below.
