How does sea-floor spreading prove the theory of plate tectonics?

Isn’t it true that as the continental plates move apart, the sea floor spreads? Please elaborate.

As tectonic plates separate and move apart from each other, there will be cracks formed. A mid-oceanic ridge is formed. Hot magma from the mantle rises up and passes through the cracks. When it cools and solidifies above the Earth’s crust, it forms a new layer of crust. Iceland is an example of a island that is formed because of the cooling of magma that rises through the cracks. It is situated on a mid-oceanic ridge.
