Floor Plate

Floor Plate
Can you put floor joist on a stell I-beam or do you need a plate on top of the beam?

Hello,

I am wondering if it is ok to rest your floor joist directly on top of a steel beam that spans and supports the joists. Do you need a to place a sill plate on top of the beam?

Thanks!
Thats a STEEL I-beam!

Yes in my opinion you do. I am sure it is possible, but every house i built, and commericial building we have always cased the beam, put a peice of lumber and then nailed it down, because how are you going to nail the FJ(floor joist) into the beam, its a bitch to even toenail into steel. So for ease of contruction put down he case ontop of steel.
