Modern Stocks And Chassis Systems For The M14 Rifle

The old faithful USGI rifle has experienced a resurgence of popularity with the Global War on Terror. Always popular in its civilian M1A guise, the M14 offers a combination of accuracy, power and rate of fire that fill a nice how being taken over by Armalite system rifles like the M110. However, the sheer numbers of M14s that escaped the Clinton era scrappings and the continued popularity of the M1A will ensure the M14 has many years ahead of it yet. This in turn has spawned a whole industry supplying accessories that bring the mid 1950s M14 into the 21st Century.

The Troy MCS is a full aluminum chassis system for the M14, M1A or SOCOM 16 rifle that uniquely has its top Picatinny rail on the same plane from the end of the receiver to front of the fore end. It also offers three more accessory rails at the sides and under the fore end. The stock system beds the stock down consistently and further glass bedding is unneccessary. This was a big problem with M14s glass bedded into the USGI stock. You can fit any M16, M4 or AR15 pistol grip or stock to this unit. The Troy M14 is arguably the best M14 chassis system on the market. If you want something a little less radical, VLTOR have taken the USGI M14 fiber glass stock and upgraded it.

The VLTOR M14 stock adds a cleverly engineered stock extension that enables you to fit any AR stock in a folding configuration. More clever still, it features length of pull and comb height adjustments that enable you to optimise comb height for either iron sights or optical sights. Again AR pistol grips are used. This stock retains something of the visual appeal of the traditional M14 stock. To add forward mounted optical sights with the VLTOR M14 stock, you need a handguard rail. VLTOR made their own tri-rail set-up, the CAS-14 which Springfield Armory adopted as their Cluster Rail. Another great option is the Amega Ranges M1A scout mount. This clamps extremely securely to the barrels and, in trials, actually improved accuracy. The Scout Mount offers you the possiblity of adding additional rail sections to add lights or lasers. It is an inexpensive way of making a USGI Stocked M1A much more versatile.
