what is the best grip for fencing?

I am buying equipment for tournament ready gear for fencing. So whats the best grip to get with positives and negatives or tradeoffs. Russian AF, AF Viscoti, Uhlmann Belgium, Uhlmann German, or Uhlmann Viscoti?

There is no single best grip for every person. The best grip for you depends on your style, the size of your hand, how you’ve been taught to manipulate the blade, and so on. You can thin your list down a bit by eliminating one of the visconti grips, by the way. The differences between Absolute’s and Uhlmann’s are subtle enough that if you’re not highly familiar with using a pistol grip (regardless of style), you probably won’t notice them.

That being said, the two most widely used pistol grip styles are the belgium and the visconti. The best thing to do is to get your coach’s assistance in this as he or she should have at least a little experience in matching grips to fencers. Failing that, find fencers at your club or in your class using these grips and ask them if you can see what they feel like before you order anything. Another option, although not ideal, is to order one weapon with a visconti and one with a belgium (since you need two weapons anyway). After you’ve used both for a little while, you should have a good idea as to which one you prefer. Then it’s just a simple matter of ordering another grip and swapping it out so that both weapons have the same grip. (The original grip can then be given or sold to a club mate later on in most cases.)
