Grips Officers

Grips Officers
Splinter Cell angled pistol aiming grip?

In Splinter Cell: Conviction the agents hold their handguns with both hands but slightly angled to the side. I always thought they just did this to make it look cool in the game but I just watched a TV show where a SWAT officer was holding a pistol in almost the same way while aiming from around a corner.

Is this actually endorsed by professionals? Is it just a way to shoot better without having to look down the sights and instead down the barrel with your peripheral vision?

In general, video games are NOT good training aids for any real shooting technique.

That said, yes, it is common to use a modified shooting stance when shooting from behind cover that will leave the weapon slightly canted. The line of the shoulder should be perpendicular to the frame of the pistol, so if you are LEANING out from behind a corner, using the barrier as cover for your lower body, and retreating fully behind the cover when not firing, your shoulders will be tilted when firing, therefore, your pistol (or rifle or shotgun for that matter) will also be tilted when firing.

This technique trades off stability and accuracy for protection. Your base and core are compromised by leaning, which makes your shooting platform less stable. However, getting shot will make your shooting platform MUCH less stable than leaning a little, and generally ruins your day altogether.

In a kill or be killed scenario, whatever technique works is the right one. There are many Practical shooting competitions where shooters are forced to shoot around, over, and under obstacles, and from many different positions, a true testament to their ability to adapt their shooting skill to meet any situation that might arise.
