How does a gun cable lock work?

I have to do one of those safety demos to get a gun. And they all come now with that cable with the lock at the bottom. How do you install/remove it from a pistol? Where does it go?

on a pistol the cable passes thru the barrell, loops around and locks together rendering the pistol inoperable.

When you are using the weapon, use the key to unlock and slide from the barrell to take it off. it doesn’t “go” anywhere. Put it where you store the gun.
