A hunter points a rifle directly at a coconut that he intends to shoot off a tree. It so happens that the coconut falls from the tree at the exact instant the hunter pulls the trigger. What happens to the bullet?
A.It passes above the coconut.
B.It passes beneath the coconut.

Ignore all the answers that say the bullet hits because the bullet is so fast and the coconut doesn’t have time to fall very far.
The answer IS C, but their reasoning is wrong.
Picture a straight line from the rifle to the coconut. Without gravity, this is the path that the bullet would travel.
Now, add in gravity.
The coconut drops from the tree at the exact instant the hunter pulls the trigger. Just for argument’s sake, let’s assume that the bullet is exceptionally slow, and the coconut tree is exceptionally tall.
After one second, the coconut will have fallen about 16 feet. In this time, the bullet will begin along the straight path, but due to gravity, will also drop away from that straight path exactly as the coconut drops from the tree. The bullet will now be 16 feet below the line.
Continue along until the bullet hits the coconut.
Because the bullet always moves away from the straight line at the same rate that the coconut moves away from its release point, the bullet will always hit the coconut.
I’ve seen this demonstration performed with 1-inch steel ball bearings fired at plates dropped from a 100-foot tower. Even when the ball only gets to the plate just before the plate smashes on the ground, the ball ALWAYS hit the plate.
