If there is enough Social Security to pay out 100% benefits until 2037, why is that part of debt talks today?

Why can’t we concentrate on other things – like getting out of the wars, or eliminating subsidies to the corn industry?

Excellent point—and one made by Democrats over and over again. President Obama is willing to consider means testing for Medicare (wealthy people might have to contribute more so that the costs do not expand more than is already the case) and maybe allowing the age for Social Security retirement to be raised to 67 because many people do not want to retire at 65 and the new health care provisions have PREVENTIVE CARE included at no cost to the consumer (thus prolonging life expectancies). This was a concession made to the Republicans in order to generate some give-and-take, but Republicans do not want to negotiate at all!

In order to the more than 75-year-old Social Security Trust Fund to remain solvent into the foreseeable future, this nation only needs to EXPAND THE JOBS BASE (in other words, Republicans and greed-driven CEOs—QUIT OUTSOURCING OUR JOBS)! The more Americans working, the more money going into the kitty (the Trust Fund).
