How do you make dark brown leather lighter?

I have a dark brown leather sofa but would like to make it a light brown, almost distressed but without the texture? Is this possible without damaging the leather and sacrificing the smooth texture?

Lightening leather is quite tricky but can be done. First, you need to remove the top coat using a deglazing compound. After deglazing, you can use an oxalic acid solution to bleach the existing color. Rub the acid solution onto an area of the leather and let it dry. Reapply or strengthen the acid solution until you achieve the desired results. Apply a new top coat to finish.
