Though quad rails have taken the AR world by storm, there is still a substantial market for light weight handguards that offer some accessory capability. Often these are carbines carried for self-defence by individuals for whom shooting back is very much a secondary role. Also, people who keep a rifle in the home for self defence or recreational shooting may want something light and handy that can still take a flashlight and perhaps a foregrip.
The Magpul MOE hand guard offers a light but ergonomic and stylish fiber-reinforced polymer alternative to the USGI handguards on carbine, mid range and full length ARs. It has a trapezoidal cross section and ventilation slots that are reminiscent of the FN FAL. However, the Magpul MOE handguard adds wide transverse ribs to assist grip and a lip around the front end to prevent the hand slipping forward onto hot metal. An aluminium heat shield under the polymer protects the supporting hand. A nice feature of the Magpul MAgpul MOE hand guard is that it doesn’t protrude above reciever rail height. This means that, as long as the sight can clear the delta ring, it will clear the hand guard – a real problem with some sights. Earlier Eotechs without cantilevered battery housings for example. The handguard can be fitted with the Magpul MOE illumination kit which features both normal and cantilevered short Picatinny rails and flashlight switch mounts for both new and old style Surefire switches. You can also fit any of the three lengths of polymer Picatinny rail at the 2, 6 and 10 o’clock positions to the Magpul MOE handguard using the hardware provided. You can fit either angled or vertical fore grips.
The Magpul MOE grip is a fixed version of the Magpul MIAD grip and is shaped like the MIAD configured to ‘medium’ size. It is an economic and comfortable drop in replacement for the USGI unit. It is compatible with Magpul MIAD grip cores which provide dry, rattle free storage for a variety of small items. Cores are supplied to take the CR123 battery, AA or AAA batteries or a bolt and spare firing pin.
The next alternative is the Magpul MIAD grip. This is basically an adaptable version of the MOE grip. Some of the rear inserts for the Magpul MIAD include a beavertail to cover up any gap between the grip and the reciever. The Magpul MIAD grip comes as a kit and can take the grip cores described earlier. The polymer used for these accessories enables the manufacturer to offer them in various colours including OD Green, Foliage Green, Dark Earth and Black.
