RE: .22 Mark III Ruger?

What is the purpose of the mainspring housing latch on the back of the grip?

The latch releases the mainspring. That’s how you break the pistol down for thorough cleaning.

I have a Mark II and believe, it can be tedious.

The manual you should have gotten with the gun should explain how to break it down. If you don’t have a manual, Ruger is very good about supplying them.
