Mosin–Nagant magazine loading position?

There’s a little narrow u-shaped part of the top-loading magazine, closest to the rear of the rifle that can be seen when the bolt is in the rear position. Is that where the bottom of the round fits, or do you put the round forward of that? What purpose does that u-shape on the rear of the magazine serve?
Stripper clips make perfect sense…they’d fit right into that little part of the magazine.
