Improving Factory AR Mags
Magpul built their reputation on providing innovative, well engineered products to shooters at affordable prices. These often add functionality and reliability to the factory original. Magpul have used fiber-reinforced polymer to great effect in their products.
One such product is the Magpul M-16 magazine follower. This has gone through three generations of development. Molded from polymer, the AR follower will not tilt in operation preventing the forms of failure to feed that this causes. The Magpul M-16 follower is self lubricating within steel or aluminum GI magazines and an extended bolt catch ensures last round hold open. A spring stabilizer ensures that a constant force is applied to the rounds in the magazine. The follower’s edges have been rounded in the Gen. 3 unit and the feed ramp angle has been refined for even more reliable feeding.
Another improvement to the factory GI M-16 magazine is the Magpul Ranger Plate. This is an ergonomic handle that replaces the factory floorplate. The Ranger Plate protects the bottom of the magazine when dropped and provides a handle to grasp when extracting the magazine from tight pouches. It also lets you hold onto a partially empty mag with one finger during a tactical reload. The Ranger plate is made of rubber molded over a stainless steel plate that slides into a polymer insert that locks the Ranger Plate in place of the factory floorplate. The result is a very tough assembly. The Magpul Ranger Plate is available in black, dark earth, OD green and foliage green to match the environments in which it will serve or the taste or the user.
The Ranger plate is also available for the Magpul PMAG. The Magpul PMAG Ranger Plateanchor text is very similar to the M-16 Ranger Plate but is designed to slide in to the Magpul PMAG magazine in 20 or 30 round capacity to replace the factory floorplate. The PMAG Ranger Plate features the same handle as the M16 version and includes a loop to enable paracord loops to be tied on in whatever configuration the operator desires. PMAGs can be purchased ready equipped with Ranger plates.
