Anyone know how to collapse an extending police-type baton?

I have a collapsible baton- it’s about 12″ long and extends then locks into place with a flick of the wrist. The trouble is, I can’t figure out how to collapse it again. What’s the mechanism that makes it lock in the extended position? I’ve tried to get it to collapse, but nothing works- it just won’t budge.

There are two types, Monadock brand has a buttom on the bottom of the handle that you press and it releases. The other brand, ASP locks by friction. To collapse it you simply tap the end onto a hard surface and it will collapse.
