Art Nouveau; The Humble Beginnings Of Graphic Design

Graphic illustrators near the end of the 19th century were concerned with shape, design and pattern. The man whose influence changed the way modern graphic designers look at a page and who introduced those elements was merely 26 years old when he passed away. During his short career, he created and popularized his own unique interpretation of the art nouveau style, which subsequent artists have endeavored to copy at different times throughout the 20th century. One of the most famous and infamous literary figures of this time period was Oscar Wilde, who was a patron of various artistic styles, he put forth that art was an end unto itself and neither moral nor ethical judgments should be put upon it. Oscar Wilde decided to choose this special young artist to illustrate a certain story which was both perverse and exotic. The blossoming artist utilized dark eroticism, grand lines, arrangements and interesting imagery to depict the storyline.

His work features dramatic inter-relationships of black and white. He employs huge planes and borders or alternatively darkness that contrasts with fragile patterns that play on a white surface. Large, sweeping, winding curves generate movement across Wilde’s pages. His pieces tend to be asymmetrical. Human characters in these drawings were generally created with deceptively simple outlines in contrast to the complexities of their environment and the objects that they interact with on paper. The power of his art was created by the interweaving of simple elegance and complicated precision.

Imports from Japan stimulated and aroused designers toward 19th century’s end. This coupled with a rejuvenated interest in early Renaissance decoration and medieval arts exhilarated artists of the time period and reinvigorated the entire art world. The youthful illustrator’s work remained copied on a grand scale in both the United States and Europe, and it turned out to be popular because of his drawings that were showcased in a few well known publications. Nowadays, a great deal of his work is reproduced to be employed as framed posters and prints hung on walls. If you like this article on design visit crowdsourcing design for more education.

The late 19th century also saw the development of the poster from a medium used in commercial advertising to an art form in its own right. Even though the books of that particular era were being produced in black and white print, color posters were also being printed. Poster design was usually focused on a single, bright, eye-catching element. Kept brief and to the point were the words which provided information about the product. He knew that the audience’s attention was more easily attracted to simplicity so he used vivid colors and flat, basic shapes. His lines proved to be a little hesitant and broken, as in an Impressionist era painting. Tbis artist’s work is therefore widely known as the precursor to the true art nouveau poster aesthetic.

Another artist known for bolder lines and more flowing curves is considered as the father of the prototypical art nouveau poster. Slender young female figures in flowing, classically-inspired gowns and long, loose hair was the mainstay of this style.  Mythic creatures and other fantasy motifs were often incorporated into these illustrations. Other artists became noteworthy by limiting their canvas to tall, thin shapes, filled with the image of a single woman. Such complex involved patterns use a range of sources for inspiration, such as fold art, Arab and Moorish decorating, Hebrew letters, Byzantine mosaics, Celtic themes, and Japanese wood cuttings.

Talented turn of the century graphic designers produced many drawings which can now be seen in reprints and books, if you look for them. Certain dealers specialize in selling late 19th century and early 20th century poster art. Their booths can be found at collectibles shops and large international style antique shows. An original work in good condition will generally set you back hundreds or thousands of dollars.
