Rear Grip

Rear Grip
What is wrong with my 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner’s rear axle?

My Roadrunner has a 383, slap-stik auto combo with an 8 3/4 open end (At least I don’t think that it’s a Sure-grip). The car has been sitting for a number of years. This afternoon I tried to move it using a pickup truck and chain. The car pulled forward no problem, but when I hooked on from behind and tried to pull it backwards, the rear wheels wouldn’t spin. I jacked the rear end up thinking that the rear brakes were frozen, as I was removing the wheel I discovered that the wheels and the driveshaft both turned well, but only in one direction, the E-brake was not engaged. To get the wheels to turn in the opposite direction just wasn’t happening. What could be wrong with the car? Any thoughts?

Sounds like the brake shoes are out of position due to prolonged non-use. When you turn the wheels backwards the shoes ‘grab’ and expand onto the drum bringing them to a stop. Try pulling offf the drums and inspect the shoes and wheel cylinders.
