CompM4 And CompM4s Reflex Sights
Aimpoint have dominated the world of red dot sights since their inception in 1975 and owned the quality end of that market for almost four decades. Aimpoint set out to eliminate parallax – according to US Army testing, Aimpoints are parallax free at ranges of 25 meters and greater. This makes the Aimpoint the equal of any scope in accuracy as long as the target is large or close enough to align on. Aimpoint is based in Sweden, a country where hunters need the capability to use their kit in deep winter. From the outset, Aimpoints were designed to operate in climatic extremes and on heavy recoiling weapons. When Aimpoint went military, they increased waterproofing depths, added NV compatability and made their sights fit MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rails.
The US Army adopted the Aimpoint CompM2 as their M68 Close Combat Optic shortly after the outbreak of the Global War on Terror. The US Army had worked its CompM2 red dots hard for six years before it started to look for a replacement. Unfortunately, an expensive battery, the 2L76 or DL1/3N was used in this unit. Aimpoint used their Circuitry Efficiency Technology to get 10,000 hours of continuous operation from the battery. Split rings had to be used because, although the tube was 30 mm, a 38 mm objective lens was employed. Another problem was that the sight could be set up out of alignment in its rings leading to cant related errors in shot placement. There were six day and four NV settings, but the 4 MoA lacked a certain amount of precision at long range. This very rugged sight had an inexplicably weak adjuster switch.
Aimpoint knew they could do better and kept improving their range whilst keeping the excellent CompM2 in production. When the time came to replace the CompM2 Aimpoint had been through two generations of development and could deliver a sight improved on the CompM2 in all the key areas. Aimpoint had introduced their Advanced Circuit Efficiency Technology or ACET in the CompM3 – a sight that was otherwise a CompM2. ACET boosted the battery life of the resulting Aimpoint CompM4 up to an amazing 80,000 hours, or over 8 years, at a day setting. Instead of the often criticized best results. To allow better precision against small and long range targets a 2 MoA dot was substituted and settings were increased to 7 night vision compatible and 9 daylight use. The most major change switched to a straight tube that screwed down onto one of a range of mounts. A knurled thumbscrew is used to clamp the standard mount to the rail. Cant related errors were eliminated by bolting the sight to whatever mount was required. The switch is now a much stronger unit and a KillFlash eliminates the possibility of glint giving away the shooter’s position.
The CompM4 was purchased by the US Army in some numbers and was a popular private purchase, but the US Army wanted one more improvement before type classifying the sight as its new M68 CCO. The use of thick arctic mittens was facilitated by mounting the battery and adjuster housing at 2 o’clock. The US Army felt this position was vulnerable and likely to snag on equipment, so they had it moved to a 4 o’clock position to avoid this, accepting slightly less accessibility as a penalty. The resulting Aimpoint CompM4s was then standardized and purchased in vast numbers. The Army gives every soldier both an M68 and an M150 ACOG so he can configure his weapon to the anticipated engagement envelope.
Quite a few manufacturers make mounts for the CompM4. Some of the most innovative and best engineered Aimpoint mounts are made in America by GG&G. The GG&G CompM4 mount is a hard anodized 6061 T-6 aluminium unit with a phosphated 4140 steel lever and fixings. GG&G have created a patented lever system, the Accucam, which compensates for out of specification and worn Picatinny and Weaver rails. It can be switched easily, repeating zero every time. The long, easily operated lever is designed not to foul on foliage or equipment. The mount is designed for absolute co-witness with standard iron sights. The sight bolts securely to the mount. Two versions are offered. The standard mount has the sight located above the mount and the cantilevered version puts the sight two inches further down the rail to allow the use of rear mounted optics and NV.
