Rifle Front
I have a Marlin 30-30 rifle with a front site problem…?
the front site is in a ‘dove tail’ groove. the set screw is tight, but the front site is loose and moves frequently. Is there any method of getting this “set” so it won’t move? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Rambo, the problem your describing is common to rifles that get carried in a boot or a bag. The front sight gets knocked around and begins to loosen up where the set screw and the blade guide connect. If you brought it to my shop I’d first check to make sure the blade isn’t cracked. Next I’d see how far it moves with finger pressure to see if it could be shimmed, reshaped or needed to be replaced. This of course is a decision you’d have to make as well depending on how much you want to spend and how well you treat the rifle.
A couple of things you could try, first loosen the set screw and slide the sight out. See if has a burr or a worn spot on it where the screw sets it pressure. If its worn or burred you’ll need to shim it. If it looks ok then see if it slides loosely through the mount, it may have been knocked around and opened the mounts blade gap. This takes a little time and trial and effort; you’ll need to close the gap so it will allow the sight to seat when tightened down.
If you contact the folks at Marlin they’ll send you a new sight. Some shops have spare sights and some don’t. If you take it to a gunshop ask the smith how long it will take and from where he orders his parts. I only order after market parts if the owner tells me to. One more thing to see about is changeing the sight to an enclosed blade. If you carry the rifle in a boot on a 4 wheeler or in a saddle scabbard this will help to protect the sight from damage.
