Why can’t we use the decay heat from spent fuel rods to boil water to make power?
I know that there must be a reason why we cannot use the decay heat from spent fuel rods to boil water, to make steam, to run a turbine to make power. It seems that this heat is going to waste while we make more fuel rods that we will have to store for 10,000 years? Any ideas here?
You most certainly could use spent rods as you suggest. The difference is the heat from the spent fuel is much less than from a live reactor, so your plant will not provide nearly the same amount of steam. The efficiency goes way down. Your power plant would grind along providing much less electricity than coal, oil, solar, wind or nuclear.
