Ruger Vaquero

Ruger Vaquero
Why would anyone do this?

I was at a friend’s house and happened to put my hand under his pillow, and found a Ruger Vaquero in .45 Long Colt. He laughed and said he kept it there “for protection.”

This guy is in law enforcement, and has a perfectly good semi automatic handgun. Why would anyone in their right mind use 1870′s technology and risk their life to a gun that is impossible to reload quickly, rather than have a modern gun at hand?

It appears that all you know about guns has been learned from the modern military. Automatic with a gillion rounds of ammo. While that may be well and good if you can’t hit the side of a barn from the inside, it is not necessary. A recent 10 year study of the NYC PD found that in all the gunfights they were in the never had to reload. There were some where the guns were emptied, but the body was long dead. If you can’t stop an intruder in a room as small as a bedroom with one shot, you just as well use a ball bat. A good six shooter is all that is needed, but I do believe I would use a double action as subsequent shots, if needed, are easier.
