Leupold’s scopes have won a great reputation for themselves through optical quality, ruggedness and design innovation. Leupold’a mounting systems are equally well regarded and are the standard others are judged by. They give you the choice of mounting semi-permanently or utlizing a rugged and reliable quick release system.
The Leupold PRW rings are their baseline military specification rings intended for semi-permanent attachment of small to medium scopes. Four 8-40 Torx screws are positioned more than half way around the ring. This stops the scope from rotating as the clamping screws are tightened down. Movement under recoil is prevented by a sturdy cross-bar and the ring is secured to the rail or base under the clamping pressure of two, larger Torx screws. The clamping rings grasp the scope and prevent it sliding back under recoil if torqued to the correct setting. The PRW rings are CNC machined from billet of steel for the greatest strength and precision, then given a matte black powder coating. A gloss black finish is also available on the 1″ medium height version.
The Leupold QRW rings are the quick release versions of the PRWs. A quick release lever replaces each pair of Torx screws. These ensure a repeat zero when the scope is removed and re-attached. The scope, once detached, is more easily protected and is off the rifle when cleaning chemicals are employed. A nice touch is that the levers can be adjusted to be at the same angle when tightened.
Military snipers use large, heavy scopes and hard recoiling rifles of up to 0.50 BMG chambering. The mission is often accomplished with the first round out of a cold barrel, so it is vital that that shot hits its intended target. The Leupold Mark 4 rings were designed without compromise to deliver these requirements. The rings are massively built, CNC machined from 11L17 steel and secured with four heavy-duty Torx screws using the wrench supplied. Large, easily torqued hex nuts are used to clamp the ring to the rail. With the current emphasis on weight reduction due to dismounted operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere, Leupold came up with an aluminum version of the Mark 4 rings. 7075 T-651 aluminum is twice as strong as 6000 series and means that little strength has been sacrificed for lighter weight.
