Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 for Home Defense?

Which one do you think is a better more reliable shotgun? I want one that is going to last me a long time!

I’m in 99% agreement with Ian M. There is very little difference between the two shotguns. The one difference that might matter a little bit is price. But that’s just about a $50 difference, and it might change depending on your location and supply.

The other difference between the Mossberg and the Remington include:
1) Mossberg is a bit lighter because it uses an aluminum receiver, but the Remington is a bit more durable (if you ever plan on your shotgun being run over by a truck).
2) Mossberg has 2 shell extractors, Remington only has one. Both systems seem to work fine.
3) Mossberg has a shell elevator that is normally “up”, while in Remington the shell elevator is normally “down”. This means that it is easier (on your thumbs especially) to load a Mossberg without the shell elevator biting back. But a lowered Remington shell elevator means less debris getting into your shotgun.
4) Mossberg has the safety on the top of the shotgun facing you, Remington has a safety button forward of the trigger. Largely personal preference.
5) Same as above with the slide release locks. Again, largely personal preference.
6) Mossberg allow for simple mounting of a rail on the top of the receiver. With the Remington you have to use some of the side pins to mount a rail, making it a bit bulky. This is one of the few times there is a difference, and it goes to Mossberg.

That’s all I can figure for now. I have a Mossberg 500 and my brother has a Remington 870. We shoot each other’s shotguns all the time, and apart from that fancy Knoxx stock on his, there’s no real difference.

As for breacher/cruiser shotguns (shotguns with just a pistol grip and no stock), you should probably stay away from those. When used by police, breacher shotguns aren’t meant to be an actual weapon, but a tool that is specifically used against doors. Breacher shotguns are meant to be left on your back until you meet a particularly stubborn door. If you think about it, using the sights on a shotgun (and yes you should still definitely use your sights with the Hollywood “scattergun”) means you’ll still be holding the shotgun in front and away from you. Might as well get a stock to fill that space.

As mentioned before Knoxx recoil-reducing stocks (be careful as they make a cheaper non-recoil-reducing stock) do make a difference, and your shoulder will thank you.
