Silica Gel?

What is the purpose of the stuff, for real?

Silica Gel is basically moisture super-absorbing sand. This helps prevent moisture damage to a wide range of products including: electronics, some foods, some boxed furniture, even sheet steel when shipped.

It does get fully saturated but can be re-used if “baked” dry. There is also silica that comes in colours to show the effectiveness left(turns blue as the percentage of water goes up).
