Remington 700 Trigger Upgrades,

A trigger upgrade is the easiest way to improve the precision of a Remington 700 and the one that will have the most dramatic effect.  Various options are available including honing the mating surfaces of the factory unit or kits that replace some trigger components with upgraded, finely polished units. This piece will cover three drop in, or semi drop in replacement trigger units from Timney, Shilen and Arnold Jewell.

Most shooters will be trying to wring acceptable accuracy from a stock Remington ADL or BDL – perhaps a family heirloom or a cherished hunting iron that has been subjected to knockaround use for decades. The unit will need a pull that’s safe for shooting from the shoulder with numb fingers and not break the bank. Timney have focused on providing affordable trigger units that will serve deer hunters well. The Model 510 Rem 700 Timney trigger with safety also fits the Models 7, 721 and 722 including versions with the ISS bolt lock. The Timney Rem 700 trigger leaves the bolt free to reciprocate even in rifles formerly fitted with a bolt lock. It locks the trigger not the sear and the trigger will stay in the position it was in when the safety was applied. The Timney Rem 700 trigger offers a pull from 1.5 -4lb for deer hunting and general purpose use with a crisp clean let-off and a 3/8″ (9.5 mm) serrated blade that may require some material removing from the stock to fit. Creep and backlash are also adjustable. This unit is made of steel, not stainless, but hardened appropriately throughout.

Bench rest shooters want a very light, utterly predictable pull in a unit without a safety.  The Shilen Remington 700 Competition trigger is such a model that will fit the 40X rifle and XP100 pistol.  The Shilen Rem 700 trigger is adjustable from 2 – 6 ounches with a crisp, light break. A smooth, quality feel is ensured by polishing and heat treating all mating surfaces. The adjusters are secured with hex lock nuts, but, like those on the Timney, they can only be adjusted with the stock removed. The unit could not be simpler to fit – two pins secure it in the unit. This unit has no safety, but may be fitted to left or right handed units.

Those varminting, investing in a new custom tactical action or blueprinting an existing PSS or Police action will want to invest in a no compromise trigger unit.  The Rolls-Royce of triggers is the Arnold Jewell Remington 700 trigger.  The Jewell Remington 700 trigger is a highly respected unit – so much so that some custom rifle makers wont let a rifle leave their workshop without one fitted. The whole unit is machined from stainless steel with 440 heat treated to RC52 for the working parts and 300 series steel sheet for the housing.  The Jewell Rem 700 trigger will serve just as well in benchrest or varmint shooting as in sniping. The single stange Jewell Rem 700 trigger has all three adjustments (pull weight, length of pull and overtravel) externally adjustable with no need to take the action out of the stock. The settings are secured by inserts made of nylon. This holds the adjustments rock solidly against the worst that recoil and vibration can throw at them. This Jewell trigger is available for the Remington 700 in two versions.

The safety and bottom bolt release equpped Remington Hunter Varmint Rifle Trigger or RHVR has a pull that can be set between 1.5 and 48 ounces. It will fit Remington 700 and 40x rifles, RH actions only.

The BR or Remington Bench Rest trigger can be set between 1.5 and 3 ounces. Again, this unit will fit the 700 and 40X, this time in either handed action.
