Tactical Sniper Stocks For The Remington 700
The Remington 700 has been around almost five decades and has become the World’s most popular centre fire hunting rifle. Its ‘three rings of steel’ construction, competitive pricing and continual innovation by Remington have lead to it being a firm favourite with hunters and target shooters the world over. Many armies around the world have standardized Remington 700s as their sniper rifle – the US Army, US Marine Corps and US Navy all have their own versions. The latest US Army XM-2010 .300 Winmag sniper rifle is a long action 700 in a modular chassis system.
The Remington 700 Police or PSS as it was formerly known is a highly popular police marksmen’s rifle around the world. One thing that help its accuracy is the HS Precision Remington 700 Police stock. This stock is traditional in shape, with a vertical pistol grip with palm swell and a wide, flat bottomed almost beavertailed fore-end. A combination of layered fiber glass and kevlar fibers is used bonded with a laminating resin around an aluminium chassis that requires no bedding. Polyurethane foam reinforced with fiber glass is used for the stock’s core to keep the weight down. Three sling swivel studs enable the fitting of a bipod and sling. An ample recoil pad is fitted to eliminate slippage. This is a very light and immensely strong unit by a company with a 33 year history of quality stock manufacture.
The next progression is a chassis system that still attempts to look like a traditional stock. The Accuracy Intenational AICS chassis system builds on the UK company’s experience in producing sniper rifles for the UK, German, Dutch, Belgian and Australian armies. The AICS uses a full length aluminium frame milled from high grade aluminium onto which polymer panels and a buttplate are bolted to give the stock its unique look. This stock again does away with the need for bedding altogether. AICS stocks can be purchased with black, dark earth or black panels in long an short action models with either fixed or folding butts. The length of pull and cheekpiece heights are both adjustable. The AICS boosts the firepower of the Remington 700 system by taking detachable magazines. In the case of the short action, these can be 5 or 10 round and they are not interchangeable with those used on AI’s own sniper rifles. The long action uses the Arctic Warfare Magnum’s 5 shot mag. The US Navy seals use the Stage 2 (folding) AICS on their Mk 13 Sniper Weapon System.
The final step is to go the whole hog and get a chassis system that makes no pretence at traditional aesthetics. The JP Enterprises MOR-07 chassis system was designed by a shooter who wanted a no-compromise chassis that would give the short action Remington 700 AR-15 ergonomics. The MOR-07 is a straight line design, again made from aerospace aluminium to which any AR15 stock and pistol grip can be attached as can the accushot monopod. Alternative fore-ends are avaiable, the wide, bench-rest style one being standard and the tubular one being the option. JP Enterprises have their own very versatile scope mounting system for this unit, the JPFTSM-30. JP offer their own ten round detachable mag for the short action Remington and the stock is compatible with Accuracy International magazines. You need to be careful whether your action takes AICS or AW type magazines as some manufacturers, Surgeon for example, will build you a 700 action for either. Like the Stage 2.0 AICS the MOR-7 stock folds – a particular boon when suppressors are used. The MOR-07 chassis is finished in a black Type III anodizing.
