STASHING YOUR STUFF - SOME HINTS TO EASE THE LOAD

Some of us are hoarders (of possessions), some of us aren't.But even if you're not a hoarder, you're still likely to need a storage facility during your life.
Moving office, moving home, freeing up some space at home, uncluttering your life or putting away stuff for your children one day... using a self-storage unit is both a practical and secure way to go.
Taking a little extra time over careful planning and moving will pay dividends. Following are some packing hints to simplify the process and enable you to access that important item if you need to !
SOME GENERAL HINTS
* Look for butcher's paper or unprinted newspaper for wrapping items, as newsprint can soil your things
* Photograph valuable items for insurance
* Arrange copies of passports, visas, birth certificates etc and keep in a separate place
* When moving house, it's advisable to pack by room and to keep all the contents of that room as close as possible
• Have a designated ‘necessities’ box which can be unpacked first and which contains vital items such as adapter plugs, screwdriver, remote controls for TVs etc, a set of linen for each bed that will need to be made up on the first night, torch, candle

BOXES
* Look for packing boxes that are all the same size and don't get them too big
* Label all boxes very clearly.Another way of doing it is to number the boxes and keep a detailed list of what's in them.Another suggestion from EzyStorage, a Perth self storage unit company, is to pack each room into boxes with a specific coloured label eg. yellow labels for kitchen, blue for study etc.
* To protect your possessions from pests, put a few napthalene balls into the boxes
• Seal boxes completely with packing tape
• Stack boxes with the labels facing OUT !
* Boxes and furniture should be placed on pallets rather than directly onto the concrete floor to prevent moisture absorption
OTHER ITEMS
• Books should be packed flat to prevent damaging their spines
* Store anything with a glass front (mirrors, pictures, paintings etc) upright or on their side, never flat
* Batteries should be removed from any items
* Prevent silver and brass from tarnishing by wrapping items in acid-free paper
* All metal, cast iron or chrome items (eg bikes, lawnmowers etc) should be wiped down with a rag and a few drops of machine oil to prevent rust
• Drain any petrol or flammable liquids from machinery, including gas bottles
* Fridges and freezers should be cleaned out and completely dry before storing.During storage, the doors should be left slightly ajar
• Clothing and curtains should be hung on hangers if possible

FURNITURE
* Store couches and mattresses on their sides
• Remove table legs if possible – otherwise stack tables upside down.
* Remove the keys from any doors, draws etc. to the inside of the item

PACKING THE SELF STORAGE UNIT
* Always keep a central aisle open
* Always store items that you may require access to at the front of the unit
• Store valuables at the rear
* Consider low-cost shelving to create more storage space which is easily accessible
• Cover possessions with a light plastic sheet or cotton dust cover
Follow these hints for a hassle-free storage experience.Self storage is cost-effective, easy to use and flexible. And it appears that more and more people are moving towards self storage as the storage method of choice, according to a Perth storage unit company, Ezystorage.
