Springfield Armory XD45–What do gunsmiths use to remove the stock sights?
I’ve got a Springfield Armory XD45 that I wanted to install TruGlo TFO sights on. However, the sights were wedged into the dovetail TIGHT. I purchased a $100 sight pusher tool to remove the stock sights, but it actually bent, and the sights didn’t budge.
This is the tool I used: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=163458
I finally gave up and sent it, and the sights, to a gunsmith for professional installation.
Now, I’ve bought another XD45, and again, I want to put different sights on it. What might gunsmiths be using to get the stock sights off these pistols?
Sometimes heat and cold will help break the sight loose in the dovetail. One way to do it is heat the outer area with a heat gun, then chill the sight quickly with butane or another aerosol. Butane chills quickly but is obviously VERY flammable, so use extreme care if using it, avoid any open flames or sources of combustion.
You could also place the slide in the freezer, then heat the outer area around the dovetail.
Just a couple of ideas that might help.
