I think it’s hard to define human nature. What would you say that is? According to my evolutionary psychology professor, it’s a part of “human nature” to feel guilt when you do something wrong, love for other people, admiration for when someone does something great, etc. I’m Christian, and of course, Christians vary in their opinions. I’m not going to pretend to know anything and I’m also willing to believe there are more than one right answers to a question. But when I think about human nature, I think about the fundamentals of who we are.
If you define human nature as the desire to conquer and kill etc, well, I think that will drag us down. But I think the only thing that makes us stand out from other animals is the fact that we’ve got the brains to be really good at conquering- not necessarily a greater desire. And if we are made in God’s image, I don’t think our fundamental nature could be put into the evil category completely. Would God make the creatures who share his image evil monsters? I think there’s parts of us in our core that help us benefit humanity and parts that help us harm. I think we’re equally equipped to be good as we are bad. If human nature will lead to our ultimate demise, then I don’t know what we can do. We can’t change our nature. I believe God has a way for salvation for humans, and thus, for human nature.
