Found a whole bunch of vintage weapons, what should I do?
My friend is a ghost towner, and we were exploring an abandoned mansion when we found a gun vault. It had been opened before. We opened it and found three Thompson “Tommy” Submachine Guns (the ones with the barrel drum magazine and the grip, like in those gangster movies) two WWII era M1 Garand Semiautomatic Rifles and six 1911 Colt 45. pistols. We don’t know what to do with them. Any suggestions?
We’ve already checked the serial numbers and had them scanned by forensics, theyre clean.

Do you have legal possession of these weapons? You found them on someone’s property. Did you have permission to be on that property and to take whatever you found? If not, you do not have legal ownership of them. They would be considered stolen property.
Additionally, the tThompson submachine guns are Class III weapons and they possession is highly regulated. Those weapons will be registered and for you to possess them you must go through the transfer procedures for Class III weapons. If the weapons have never been registered, that presents a difficult problem. You should talk with a local attorney who is familar with the gun laws of your area and who is familar with federal gun laws. You face serious legal problems if you try to sell a Class III weapon without going through the required transfer process. It is possible the guns are grandfathered in somehow because of their age.It is also possible they can be considered abandoned property. And therefore you may be able to get good title to them. Those are things the attorney can advise you on. The Class III weapons need to be locked away until you talk with an attorney. It is very likely they will have to be surrendered to ATF.
